First time MASA Israel for Cuba
In 2010, the Cuban Jewish Community attended MASA ISRAEL for the first time in history. This was during the time when the so called "Permiso de Salida"( Permission to Exit) was very difficult to get.
Two local Jewish girls: Sumiko Ruiz Zayon and Annet Pascual, university students at the time and Taglit Birthright Israel alumni, were able to attend the program, thanks to the support of Jewish Cuba Connection INC, Canada Israel Experience, World ORT, the Jewish Agency for Israel and the Charles and Lynn Schusterman Family Foundation. In February 2010 the two young girls finally made it to Israel to attend the 6 months Tikkum Olam Tel Aviv Jaffo intensive program.
After having completed this unique Israel educational program, Sumiko Ruiz Zayon went back to Cuba as the only young Jewish girl able to teach Hebrew as a second language at the local Jewish Sunday School, while Annet Pascual decided to make Aliah after her experience in the Heretz Israel.
