JCC partnered with the Shoah Foundation and Simon Wiesenthal Center to create and maintain the first permanent and Cuban-approved exhibit about the Holocaust displayed in Cuba. The Memorial opened on December 18, 2011. The exhibit, “We Remember —The Holocaust and the Creation of a Living Community,” shines a light on the Cuban Jewish experience of the Holocaust and raises the awareness of the average Cuban, that a small Jewish community makes Cuba its home. As the Shoah Foundation and Simon Wiesenthal Center have stepped into new initiatives in other parts of the world, JCC has become the primary means of support for this project. JCC is working to develop an educational program centered on the memorial to enhance awareness of the Holocaust and the consequences of intolerance. The Memorial and Study Center will be used as an education and outreach tool to educate all Cubans, and others about the Holocaust and lessons that can be derived from the Holocaust.
